How Long Do Solar Panels Last in Canada?

Hello Friends!

Solar panels have become an increasingly popular method of generating renewable energy for both residential and commercial properties in Canada. As such, it is natural for individuals to wonder how long solar panels will last. In this blog post, we will delve into the factors that affect the lifespan of solar panels and provide an answer to the question "How long do solar panels last?"

The lifespan of solar panels is generally measured in terms of their "power output warranty" and their "product warranty." The power output warranty guarantees that the solar panel will continue to produce a certain percentage of its rated power output over a specified period of years. This warranty typically lasts for 25 years, which is the industry standard. The product warranty for Canadian products, on the other hand, guarantees that the solar panel will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a specified period, typically 10 to 12 years.

While the power output warranty for solar panels is typically 25 years, this does not mean that the panels will stop working after this period. In fact, many solar panels continue to function for decades beyond their power output warranty. However, the efficiency of the panels will gradually decrease over time and the power output will dwindle.

The lifespan of solar panels is affected by a number of factors, including the quality of the materials used, the manufacturer's reputation, the installation quality, and the climate conditions in the area where the panels are installed. For example, solar panels installed in Canada where we have more harsh weather conditions, such as extreme heat, cold, ice and snow, are likely to experience a shorter lifespan than those installed in milder climates.

Regular maintenance can also affect the lifespan of solar panels. Solar panels cleaned at least once a year to remove any dirt or debris that may have accumulated on the surface. Additionally, it is important to have a professional inspect the panels periodically to ensure that they are functioning properly. The mounting hardware should also be checked so ensuring that it remains safe and effective.

In summary, the power output warranty for solar panels typically lasts for 25 years, but the panels may continue to function for decades beyond this period just at a reduced efficiency. The lifespan of solar panels is affected by a variety of factors, including the quality of the materials used, the manufacturer's reputation, the installation quality, the climate conditions in the area, and the regular maintenance performed on the panels. As such, it is important to choose high-quality solar panels and have them installed by a reputable professional in order to ensure their longevity.

Hope that helps.

I am concerned that a 25 year warranty is much longer than the company is likely to exist. Shouldn't we focus on the longevity of the company rather than the product?
